 | ECCMID 2021 Latebreaker abstract submission – Submit your abstract now!Latebreaker abstract submission is now open, and is open until 7 May 2021 at 16:00 CEST!
The ECCMID Programme Committee will allow, as an exception this year, the submission of regular research abstracts during the late-breaker call, for members of our community who could not prepare and submit their work during the regular call due to involvement in the pandemic response. These abstracts could belong to any of the abstract categories, but abstracts focusing on COVID-19 and the other late-breaker categories are highly encouraged. Read more |

|  | ESCMID online postgraduate course: Clinical and social dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic: the case of pregnant women and childrenThe ESCMID online postgraduate education course ‘Clinical and social dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic: the case of pregnant women and children’ is now open for registration.
The course will take place on 11 – 12 June 2021, and aims to educate current and future healthcare professionals in current practices and state of the art research focusing particularly on pregnant women and children in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The online event is organised by the Trainee Association of ESCMID (TAE) and Young ESPID.

For more than one year now, clinical microbiologists (CM) and Infectious Diseases (ID) specialists have been involved in one of the greatest pandemics of the beginning of the century.
Many colleagues were overwhelmed by patients with COVID-19 and others were exhausted by testing patients and asymptomatic persons for SARS-CoV-2.
In this webinar, we will focus for the first time on the professionals themselves, and not on the disease nor the microorganism, shifting focus instead onto the colleagues living this turmoil.

 | CMI highlights: Recommendations for accurate genotyping of SARS-CoV-2 using amplicon-based sequencing of clinical samplesSARS-CoV-2 genotyping has been instrumental to monitor viral evolution and transmission during the pandemic. The quality of the sequence data obtained from these genotyping efforts depends on several factors, including the quantity/integrity of the input material, the technology as well as laboratory-specific implementation. The current lack of guidelines for SARS-CoV-2 genotyping leads to inclusion of error-containing genome sequences in genomic epidemiology studies. The present study aimes at establishing clear and broadly applicable recommendations for reliable virus genotyping.
It was found that at least 1000 viral genomes are necessary to confidently detect variants in the SARS-CoV-2 genome at frequencies of 10% or higher. The applicability of such recommendations was validated in over 200 clinical samples from six independent laboratories. The genotypes we determined for clinical isolates with sufficient quality cluster by sampling location and period. The present analysis also supports the rise in frequency of 20A.EU1 and 20A.EU2, two recently reported European strains whose dissemination was facilitated by travelling during the summer of 2020.
