ECCMID Late(breaker) abstract submission – prepare your abstract!

The latebreaker abstract submission for ECCMID 2021 will open from 26 April until 7 May 2021.

Be sure to take this opportunity to submit your newly-emerging data and results.  The ECCMID Programme Committee will allow, as an exception this year, for the submission of regular research abstracts during the late-breaker call, for members of our community who could not prepare and submit their work during the regular call, due to involvement in the pandemic response. These abstracts could belong to any of the abstract categories, but abstracts focusing on COVID-19 and the other late-breaker categories are highly encouraged.

World TB day – 24 March 2021

Tomorrow (Wednesday, 24 March 2021) marks world TB Day, a WHO initiative to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing this disease.

ESCMID Professional Affairs Officer and Tuberculosis Expert, Prof. Emmanuelle Cambau, has written an article on the need for increased attention on infectious diseases such as TB, that continue to result in millions of preventable deaths. The article will be live on 24 March and can be accessed here.

ESCMID is also hosting an Online Postgraduate Education Course on tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections from 15-17 April 2021, in conjunction with the Sociedad Chilena de Infectología (SOCHINF) and the Pontifica Universidad Cátólica de Chile School of Medicine. Find out more and sign up on the ESCMID Online Courses website.

CMI highlight: Interpreting Burkholderia pseudomallei disc diffusion susceptibility test results by the EUCAST method

In some parts of the tropics, melioidosis is an important public health problem and diagnostic laboratories frequently encounter Burkholderia pseudomallei. Most of these laboratories use disc diffusion for antimicrobial susceptibility testing but have had difficulty with B. pseudomallei because of a lack of internationally accepted criteria to interpret the results. The European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) has recently published guidelines for interpretation of disc diffusion testing for B. pseudomallei, which include the adoption of the new EUCAST interpretative categorisation of susceptibility and resistance. As a consequence, laboratories have been faced with reporting antimicrobial agents of proven effectiveness for melioidosis treatment as ‘I’ (Susceptible, increased exposure) instead of ‘S’ (Susceptible), creating confusion for clinicians. In this commentary authors briefly explain the background to these changes, affirm that the recommended antibiotics with appropriately high doses can be used against B. pseudomallei reported as ‘I’ by the EUCAST method, and suggest how laboratories should use the new criteria to inform clinical practice.
