ESCMID Research Grants help young outstanding investigators pursue ground-breaking research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.

The application period for ESCMID Research Grants 2021 is open and the deadline for submitting your applications is 15 September 2020. For this call, only projects dealing with Fungal / Viral / Parasitic Infections and Diseases (incl. diagnostics, pathogenesis, antifungal/antiviral/antiparasitic susceptibility & resistance, stewardship, vaccines) will be accepted.

Register now for the first EUCIC Local Module online course in October 2020

The main goal of the websymposium is to introduce participants to the role and strengths of infection prevention and control in a regional health-care network, especially focusing on AMR as well as the regional spread of SARS-CoV-2.

Using modern and open source online tools participants will learn how to implement a regional network. This will include theoretical as well as practical training sessions, the analysis of the own regional healthcare network using modelling software, flanked by expert topics on infection- and resistance prevention, the regional spread of SARS-CoV-2 and the use of modern diagnostic technology for regional outbreak control.

Become a member of the new Ethics Advisory Committee!

The EEAC will be an independent body meant to advise the Executive Committee (EC) and other ESCMID members on ethical issues that may arise. 
If you have experience in developing and evaluating conflict of interest policies and/or an expertise in code of ethics in the scientific and medical field as well as experience and sensitisation in ethical issues management, you are welcome to send your application until 31 August 2020.

CMI highlight: Incidence of co-infections and superinfections in hospitalised patients with COVID-19: a retrospective cohort study

The present study aimed at describing the burden, epidemiology and outcomes of co-infections and superinfections occurring in hospitalised patients with COVID-19.

Based on the outcome of the conducted retrospective cohort study, bacterial, fungal and viral co-infections and superinfections in hospitalised patients with COVID-19 are low; however, when present, they may cause severe diseases with worse outcomes. S. pneumoniae and S. aureus are the most common pathogens to cause community-acquired pneumonia co-infections. In our area, P. aeruginosa and E. coli were frequent bacteria that caused hospital-acquired superinfections. According to authors’ conclusions, these findings might be important when defining the role of empiric antimicrobial therapy or stewardship strategies in hospitalised patients with COVID-19.
