ESCMID Professional Affairs Webinar: Clinical microbiologists and infectious diseases specialists during the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic

ESCMID is pleased to announce another open-access Webinar on 12 May 2021, 16:00 – 18:00 CEST. This webinar is free of charge and places are limited, so register today!

For more than one year now, clinical microbiologists (CM) and Infectious Diseases (ID) specialists have been involved in one of the greatest pandemics of the beginning of the century.

Many colleagues were overwhelmed by patients with COVID-19 and others were exhausted by testing patients and asymptomatic persons for SARS-CoV-2.

In this webinar, we will focus for the first time on the professionals themselves, and not on the disease nor the microorganism, shifting focus instead onto the colleagues living this turmoil.

You will find more information such as the programme as well as the link to register for free at the link below.

CMI highlight: Long-term outcomes of patients following hospitalization for COVID-19: a prospective observational study

Few data regarding follow-up of patients after COVID-19 discharge are available. The aim of the observational prospective study was to describe the long-term outcomes of survivors of hospitalization for COVID-19 followed up first at an outpatient facility and subsequently by telephone. 302 patients were enrolled, and the follow-up was conducted both in the hospital, after 45 days in average after discharge, and via phone up to 7 months after discharge.

Observational prospective study conducted at a tertiary general hospital. Clinical and radiological progression was assessed, and data recorded on a standardized reporting form. Patients were divided into three groups according to PaO2/FiO2 at hospitalization. A logistic multivariate regression model was performed to identify factors associated with persistence of symptoms.

It emerged that, COVID-19 patients require long term follow-up due to persistence of symptoms; patients with low PaO2/FiO2 during the acute illness require special attention.
