ESCMID Executive Committee Elections 2021: Nominations close soon!

At the end of 2021, elections will be held among the membership to fill three (out of eight) positions in the ESCMID Executive Committee, one representing clinical microbiology and two for infectious diseases.
ESCMID encourages you to propose candidates by 31 August 2021 on the ESCMID website.

Public Consultation Phase open for new ESCMID Guidelines

The PCP is now open for the „ESCMID Guidelines for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli”. Please find more information on how to participate on our website here.
Participants will receive the confidential manuscript and be asked to provide feedback and comments by 30 August 2021.

New ESCMID Study Group formed: ESGNTA

We are proud to announce the brand new ESCMID Study Group for Non-traditional Antibacterial Therapy (ESGNTA)! This Study group will focus on research relating to new therapies including Phage and Nanotechnology. You can learn more about ESGNTA activities on the ESCMID website here.

Participate now in the SurvEthics, from the Ethics Advisory Committee

The Ethics Advisory Committee has launched an anonymous survey to better understand ESCMID members and survey participants' involvement in bioethics and their perceptions of priorities and gaps in the field of bioethics and Infectious Diseases. The results will help the EEAC to better define ethical issues and design a strategy to approach them in a consistent and systematic way. Complete the survey here.

ESCMID featured in Infectious Diseases campaign

The Infectious Diseases campaign launched in New Scientist magazine and online at globalcause.co.uk aimed to put the spotlight on the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment innovation in infectious diseases. It featured thought leadership articles from the WHO, Gavi, IDSA, CDC, IFPMA, Dame Sally Davies and ESCMID’s Prof Emmanuelle Cambau with a piece on the need for medical expertise to tackle infectious disease.

Effect of discontinuation of an antimicrobial stewardship program on the antibiotic usage pattern

This study aimed to analyze the effect of discontinuation of antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) activity on the usage pattern of antibiotics. Authors showed that discontinuation of the ASP led to a rapid return to patterns prior to its implementation. A large proportion of the prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics seems to have been shifted to that of restrictive antibiotics. Therefore, instead of a reduction in the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the use of restrictive antibiotics increased.
