The Ethics Advisory Committee has launched an anonymous survey to better understand ESCMID members and survey participants' involvement in bioethics and their perceptions of priorities and gaps in the field of bioethics and Infectious Diseases. The results will help the EEAC to better define ethical issues and design a strategy to approach them in a consistent and systematic way. Complete the survey here.

The Infectious Diseases campaign launched in New Scientist magazine and online at globalcause.co.uk aimed to put the spotlight on the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment innovation in infectious diseases. It featured thought leadership articles from the WHO, Gavi, IDSA, CDC, IFPMA, Dame Sally Davies and ESCMID’s Prof Emmanuelle Cambau with a piece on the need for medical expertise to tackle infectious disease.

This study aimed to analyze the effect of discontinuation of antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) activity on the usage pattern of antibiotics. Authors showed that discontinuation of the ASP led to a rapid return to patterns prior to its implementation. A large proportion of the prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics seems to have been shifted to that of restrictive antibiotics. Therefore, instead of a reduction in the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the use of restrictive antibiotics increased.
